During Gettysburg Campaign, Confederate foraging parties, including Mosby's and McNeil's Rangers, visited the town, July 5, 1863, nearly 700 wounded Confederates, captured by Union cavalry at Cumminghams Crossroads (now Cearfoss, MD) where brought here, many buildings became makeshift hospitals.
